SAT READING SECTION

What SAT Reading tips do you need to gain a perfect score at the SAT Reading section?

This question is commonly posed on us.

The SAT’s first section is the reading test. The time allotted for this section is just over an hour, and it consists of 52 questions and 5 passages.

For many reasons, this is a challenging section, but the good news is that students who use the right strategies and prepare appropriately can achieve a perfect SAT Reading score.

We provide , expert SAT reading tips in this article to help you succeed in this section.

METHODS THAT WILL HELP YOU GAIN A PERFECT SCORE IN THE SAT READING SECTION

1. Recognize common examples of incorrect answers

Your chances of avoiding these downfalls on the SAT Reading test increase as you become more adept at identifying typical incorrect answer choices.

Typical incorrect answer options include:

  • “Extreme” responses, which frequently use the words never or always
  • Inferences that depart too much from the text
  • Alteration of passage’s specifics or keywords
  • Words that sound nice but can’t be supported by passage support
  • Citations to external knowledge

Do you see a common thread here? You guessed it: incorrect answer selections are incorrect because they lack direct support from the passage.

Therefore, students should develop the habit of citing examples from the passage for each answer they choose, not just for Command of Evidence questions. It is called the Evidence-Based Reading section for a reason!

2. Do Not Get Confused By The Choices Provided

One of the most crucial SAT Reading tips we give to our students is this. Many examinees develop the habit of reading each possible response before chosing  their response to a question.

Avoid doing this! This increases the likelihood that you will become distracted by a “shiny” trap answer.

Our advice is to read the question first, look up your answer in the passage, predict what it will be, and then rule out any possible answers that don’t fit your prediction.

3. On the dual passage, use the division strategy.

Remember that there is a dual passage in one of the five SAT Reading passages. Students will therefore have to read two shorter passages that are combined into one and respond to questions about both.

Divide and conquer rather than reading through these two passages before answering the questions! Take it one passage at a time to make your life easier.

  • Look at the test questions.
  • Take on the passage that raises the most issues. first
  • Answer questions regarding that passage
  • Take on the second passage and the corresponding questions.
  • Answer the questions regarding both passages.

Using this method, you only need to consider the questions that involve both passages at once (arguably the harder questions on the dual passage).

4. Don't forget to annotate anything.

SAT Reading passages is difficult, tiresome, and dense. When reading any passage, keep your attention by annotating.

What does the term “annotate” mean?

As you read a passage, keep an eye out for the main ideas. Note in the margins the main idea of each paragraph, underline any relevant passages, and highlight any words you recognize from the questions.

Less detail should be the focus for students. As they annotate, they should give priority to broad concepts and arguments since SAT Reading questions are most interested in these.

These notes can be very helpful later on when students are answering questions because they give a clear road map for passage ideas (and ultimately answers).

5. Think in terms of main ideas

When reading a SAT passage, keep in mind the main ideas.

But it’s equally crucial to consider these key concepts when responding to questions. In fact, it is frequently possible to use a process of elimination based on which responses are consistent with the main idea of the passage and which are not.

For instance, when answering this question, test-takers should first think about the paragraph’s main idea. It’s likely that the answer to this query relates in some way to that central notion.

6. Be precise.

Once more, this is among the most significant SAT Reading advice we give to our students.

The passage itself contains every response to every SAT Reading question that is accurate. This means that if students find themselves making assumptions, significant inferences, or other logical leaps, they should proceed with extreme caution.

Answer questions truthfully! Utilize only the information in the passage and the question stem. Answer options that diverge from these two concepts should be viewed with extreme caution.

7. Read while preparing.

On the SAT Reading, students will come across a wide variety of passages, including some genres they might not typically read.

These in particular include speeches, books from a previous generation, and original research papers.

We advise students to prepare for this challenging section by keeping a reading list on hand. It doesn’t have to be difficult!

It might be as easy as reading an article in an academic journal that interests you, getting a subscription to The Economist, or finishing one chapter of Jane Eyre every week.

Practice more by mentally summarizing the key points of what you’re reading, or even annotating!

8. Put accuracy before quantity.

Many examinees rush through the SAT Reading because they are accustomed to having to respond to every question on a high school exam. Even if some of the answers are educated guesses, they try to answer every query.

This is not a tactic to adopt for the SAT Reading or the entire test. Accuracy suffers from speed a lot. If students focus on answering more questions correctly than getting more questions right, they are more likely to receive a higher grade overall.

This can be helped by utilizing a guessing strategy and playing to your strengths. The same is true for routinely evaluating your development through practice exams.

9. Writing and language shouldn't be overlooked.

Your SAT Reading, Writing, and Language scores make up your SAT Verbal score. Keep this important fact in mind as you consider how to raise your SAT score.

It’s crucial to invest the same amount of time in this other section’s preparation if you want to achieve a perfect or nearly perfect score on the SAT Verbal.

The passages on the Writing & Language section aren’t nearly as difficult as the ones on the SAT Reading section, but your preparation for these two sections can still be helpful. The majority of the questions on the Writing & Language section test your comprehension of the context, key concepts, and logical argument.

10. Practice frequently and close to the source.

It’s crucial to use practice materials that are as similar to the original as possible when preparing for standardized tests.

Why does this matter? Since the College Board is the company that creates the SAT, start by using their study materials.

Additionally, we advise students to make a study plan before preparing for any SAT section. Timed practice exams should be a regular part of this study schedule.

Given the SAT Reading section’s strict time constraints, frequent practice exams are essential for preparation. Success depends on a number of the strategies we’ve covered in this post.
